BOTOX® Cosmetic in St. Louis, MO

The injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic into facial muscles to lessen the visibility of overlying facial “lines” is a procedure that Dr. Scheu has been doing for over 10 years. The technique has been proven safe, and is now a widespread practice even being done in “Spas” and most of the time, not by physicians. The value of having your plastic surgeon perform the injections is that Dr. Scheu (who performs all the BOTOX® Cosmetic injections in this practice personally) has seen and worked with these muscle groups under direct vision in the performance of facelifts, neck lifts and eyelid and brow lifts over the years. This gives him a more-precise appreciation of the location, thickness and action of the muscles of the face and neck which are injected, and gives his patient an added measure of assurance.

Botulinum toxin is the active agent which is injected into the facial muscles, which comes as a crystalline powder, and has to be put into solution by the addition of sterile saline which is done by Dr. Scheu himself also, and then the injections are done of the muscles lying beneath the “wrinkle” lines, with enough of the toxin to have the desired effect; the muscles treated then start to relax over the next few days to weeks. Wrinkle lines of the upper face (the “frown lines” between the eyebrows are the primary accepted sites for use of BOTOX® Cosmetic) are the usually-treated ones, but the BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used in an “off-label” manner, to inject other muscles, and Dr. Scheu has used the BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to relax the corners of the mouth, to get the brows to elevate some, or to relax the vertical muscle bands in the neck, and, thus, we offer multiple choices for face and neck rejuvenation–without surgery in some cases, although the length of time for the result is only 3 to 6 months. These injection procedures are done in the office by Dr. Scheu (and in one Salon in St. Charles County), and the treatment does not need anesthesia beyond application of a “cold pack” to the sites to be injected in the occasional patient.

Even though the duration of the effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic is limited to 3 to 6 months, many women find the treatment ideal for a short-term application, when some event is coming up where they want the lines to be less prominent, like a reunion, wedding, or other social event, especially when a lot of facial photos will be taken.

Certainly, since BOTOX® Cosmetic has a long track-record, its safety has been long-established for injection into muscle that we want to “weaken”–and, more recently, the injections have been used to treat hyper-hidrosis (excess sweating), both in the axillae (armpits) and hands. However, these applications require a significant amount of the BOTOX® Cosmetic to be injected, and are therefore much more costly than the standard BOTOX® Cosmetic facial injections. (Although this is treatment for a medical condition, insurance does not reimburse our practice for our fee for the treatment.) The benefit of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections in the axilla tend to last longer than BOTOX® Cosmetic injections into the facial muscles–lasting up to a year in some of our patients!
